Hey, everybody, welcome to today's episode, I am so happy to introduce you to Angela Joy Markham. And she is going to give us her download on all things affiliate marketing and what she does to bring that to life for her business and for her customers. So welcome, Angela. So happy to have you here today. Give us a little bit of a sense for who you are and what you've got going on.

Angela Joy Markham:

Thank you. I'm so excited to be here. Yes, my name is Angela Joy, Joy Markham. And I started a business helping female founders use affiliate marketing to grow their businesses, kind of without all the icky and salesy affiliate marketing methods that you see out there. So I teach affiliate marketing, to grow your business while keeping your integrity. And yes, I'm so excited to help answer any questions and clarify some maybe misconceptions that are currently out there.

Tara Bryan:

Awesome. Welcome. So my first question, I guess, for you is what is affiliate marketing for all the people out there who maybe don't have an idea of what that is? And how it can help their business? Give us a little bit of kind of the one on one version of what it is? Yes.

Angela Joy Markham:

So affiliate marketing is when a merchant or a brand partners with an advertiser, someone who wants to advertise for them. So it's an exchange of commission. So the best way that I can use or explain this to you is by like, giving you an example, I guess. So say I, I am a blogger or a content creator, that loves makeup, and I teach makeup tutorials, I probably have some brands that I love as far as makeup goes. And I can partner with some of these brands. So maybe, let's just use Cover Girl, everybody knows Cover Girl. So I want to partner with Cover Girl and become an affiliate for cover girl. And I can refer makeup cover girl makeup sales to my audience and cover girl will pay me a commission for any sale that I refer.

Tara Bryan:

Awesome. Okay, so let's just break that down. Because I think that that's really compelling for people. And so a lot of times if people have on their sites, links to various things, right. So for example, on my resources page, I have links to books and resources and tools that I recommend that people can consume. So with that, I get a commission based on if you click on it, and you buy it, right, so so a lot of times people will disclose that and say, Hey, if you like this, I'm recommending it, it's my my thing, and go and check it out. And then that link provides an kind of an automatic commission. Right. So so it's, it's a way to get income on things that obviously you said with integrity. So so people in my audience have lots of integrity, right? So so it's your only recommending things that you believe in, that you think are high quality or things that you would recommend or use yourself, right. That's what you're talking about in terms of integrity, right? So you're not just like, throwing random links out for products you don't know or you don't trust or whatever, right?

Angela Joy Markham:

Yeah, yeah, you're exactly right. And so what I like to always say is, you're recommending products or services that your audience actually needs the most, that also complement your offer. So you have core things core bread and butter services or offerings that you're really good at. And affiliate products are really great to complement that. So another example here, this is actually the first affiliate partner I ever had. And so back when I was doing graphic design a little bit more full time than I am now. I would create digital postcards for customers. And so I would custom memorize these postcards, then send them a digital like jpg or PDF file. And I was getting all these questions back to me, do you have a printer that you'd recommend that I can go print my digital files? Well, yes, of course I do. Like I'm a graphic designer. So I print stuff all the time. But this just not was not a service I was providing. So I went and did all the research, I went through some of my top favorite printers, discovered, which ones have affiliate programs, and then looked into those, having them send me paper samples, going through the whole purchase process again, and really trying to figure out what my favorite printer was, so that I could recommend this link affiliate link to my customers that needed a printer. So I truly never felt like I was selling anything, I think that's the thing with affiliate marketing is, is it can come off kind of salesy or spammy, if it really doesn't make sense with your business. And so that's what I like to teach my clients is how to just create this really aligned partnership, where it just makes sense. It's outside of your bread and butter service, you don't have to create a new product or service, you can just refer that affiliate product and start, like getting actual income, in addition to your business income.

Tara Bryan:

Yeah, I love that. Well, and it's so interesting, right? Because that's the way that I think about it as well, too, is it's just like, people are asking, Well, what do you use for this, and then I'm like, Oh, I use this. And because I use it, because I believe in it, it's really easy to say this is what I use. And then on the back end, that company appreciates what you're doing by referring people to them. It's just like, you know, referring clients appreciate it. So they are, you know, giving you a reward basically, for referring people to your thing. So that's, that's, I think it is interesting, because I do think that a lot of people don't actually think about that, right? Even if you know, you will refer somebody to a new book or to a new product or something, something that's your thing. Just even just even looking to see if there's an affiliate commission that goes with it. It just it makes sense. But we don't think about it. So when you are helping your clients. And I don't even know if you have an answer to this. But when you're helping your clients, like on average, do you know how much more like how much additional income somebody could earn from affiliate Commission's based, like, so you're doing your thing, you're teaching your courses, or you're working on your one on one, you know, services or whatever. And then there's this, like, actual, like, commission that's working for you, right like that you're not actually doing anything for what's the potential there?

Angela Joy Markham:

Yes, no, that's a great question. I can absolutely answer that. So part of the process of what I teach is a Venn diagram. I know we're just listening here. But if you can imagine that Venn diagram with the three circles, and then there's that sweet spot in the middle where these three things overlap, I like to say you really need to look at is it a product or service that I love that I'm passionate about? Is that a product or service that my customers will love. And then also that third part to the piece to the puzzle is what I like to call a niche factor. And so you're really looking at is there a group of people that are actively searching and willing to purchase this product. So it's not something that is so niche that you have no one that's really looking for it. But it's also not something that's super popular, like, let's just say Nike, it's going to be hard to really do well, with the the top and the bottom of the spectrum, you want that middle sweetspot for the niche factor. So keeping those three things in mind, you really do have to do a little bit of upfront work in looking to make sure that it's going to be a good fit with you and your audience in that first company, that printer that I was talking about, I got to a point where I was making about $300 a week with one partnership. So the way that I teach is if you are new to affiliate marketing, let's start small, let's start with just two to three at a time. And figure out look at if the juice is worth the squeeze, I always say evaluate if the juice is worth the squeeze on each one of those. And then you can start to add more partnerships rather than some people think, Oh, I have like 20 brands that I want to start to promote right away. I usually say let's step back and let's start one at a time. But yeah, like I've worked with clients that have developed all the way up to like $1,000 a month or more recurring income where they've set up systems in their business. And this is just just awesome. Matic income that's coming in with very little work.

Tara Bryan:

So, yeah, very cool. All right, everybody, what can you do with an extra $1,000 a month? Right. Like, let's think about that. All right, cool. All right, I want to switch gears just slightly. And I want to talk about your journey from going from sort of a traditional career path and corporate to starting your own thing and making that that leap of faith. Tell me about that experience. And especially from an expertise standpoint, like, how did you know that you could go and monetize your expertise? How did you know that you could go and, like, build an online business? What is what did that journey look like for you?

Angela Joy Markham:

Ah, such great questions. Um, I first will say that you definitely don't have to be one of those people that from a very young age, you knew you wanted to be an entrepreneur, because I was turned off, I, I literally was like, I can never do this, I have no desire to own my own business. I'm going to keep scaling my income and moving up the corporate ladder. And so it was wasn't until like, a few years ago, probably that I really got that entrepreneurial spirit. So this is short term. I mean, I'm almost 35 years old. So I was in corporate America for a while. And I was using my side hustle as my kind of like creative expert exploration. But like I said, In the beginning, it wasn't really going to be a full time business ever. And so I worked in corporate America, I wasn't getting my creative outlet. My side hustle was fulfilling that creative outlet. But then something kind of changed in me, to be honest, when I had kids, I, I've also never been one of those people that really wanted to be a full time stay at home parent, I have a little bit too much fire within me where I need to explore and build build something for myself. So yeah, I worked worked in marketing, I guess, doing my graphic design, side hustle. And then, within marketing, I discovered this affiliate marketing niche in 2014. And from there, I really started to explore using it for myself, so becoming an affiliate, because in my job, I was coordinating with merchants. So now I truly feel like I have this kind of unique skill set. Because I know what merchants want. I've been working with merchants for about eight years. And for the past year now, I've been working on the affiliate side, using my own expertise as an affiliate. So yes, my process just combines both of those things. And I really just within the past couple of years started to get a ton of questions, people would see that I work in affiliate marketing, and like, oh, you know, debunk this myth, or, you know, I have this product or this brand that I want to promote, and that I love, but I'm not trying to get started, can you help me. And I just simply started to really love it. And I moved into creating, I have a couple courses. Now. I do one on one programs. I take, you know, random clients that come in, and we just want to do like a quick fast track, like 90 minute session and get all their questions answered. And get system set up. I do do it that way. So right now I'm just at a point where I'm just loving all of the all of the questions that come in and get them to serve, serve people that maybe don't know how affiliate marketing could fit into their business. So,

Tara Bryan:

yeah, okay, so you had an expertise. And then there are people who needed your expertise. And so that allowed you to really make it into a full time gig. Right? So sort of your side hustle took over the work that you were doing in your business in your your corporate job. Is that kind of what happened? Yes. Yeah, exactly. So take me to that date. Because I think that this is something that's really interesting for a lot of people who are who have built a side hustle, and then all of a sudden, they are like going back to their job and saying, Okay, well wait a minute, like, which one do I do? Like, how do I? How do I know that it's time for me to take the leap? Or how do I know what that looks like? So take us back to that. Like when you made the decision that it was time to kind of quit the job and do this side gig full time. What was going through your head like was it Oh, I know I have enough people. So I'm good. I I'm a rock star. I can do this. You know, why not? Like talk us through what that looks like? Because I think that's really valuable for people who are maybe in the spot where you were at that time and are feeling the momentum but aren't sure it's just like, Ah, right. Yeah,

Angela Joy Markham:

yeah, it's, it's kind of like this. A little bit of a feels like a slippery slope a little bit. And yes, it's so true I, I definitely took my time to evaluate my decision. But I will also say that my personality is I'm kind of like, fly by the seat of my pants with my decisions. And my husband is not that way. So I was really relying on him to be kind of my, like, level headed side. And he truly was he was giving me the freedom I needed, not ever telling me no, but, but also putting in a little bit of that like, caution, like, maybe let's just like sleep on it a few more nights before you just go quit your job. But truthfully, I was feeling like, I can totally do this, I'm just going to take a leap of faith, there's no way I'm going to be able to play big right now I'm playing small because it's a side hustle. And I can only spend a few hours a week on top of my job. So in my mind, I was like there was there's no way I'm going to be able to see the potential, if I sit here working on my business a couple hours a week. And so what I felt like I needed to do after discussing this with my husband, and I also will say I was working with the coach, I was working with a coach at this time, that was helping me get through these mental barriers of feeling like I was good enough, but also again, playing that role of like, okay, what would make you feel competent enough to quit your job. And so we actually on paper, put down a game plan, which was I knew I wanted to replace close to what my income was. So putting in some contracts I, I actually gave some of my clients, I was already working with the opportunity to get a sort of like, discounted rate with me, if they would sign more of a long term contract. I was giving myself a buffer in a sort or in a sense, so that I could feel comfortable and like, okay, like, if I can give, if I can have a couple of my clients sign a four month contract recurring, then I would feel so much better about having that four months of guaranteed pay where I could kind of figure out the rest as I take my leap of faith.

Tara Bryan:

Yeah, that's so good. I remember when I left corporate, many years ago, for me, I had a six month kind of gig. Right? So I was like, Okay, I have six months to that, that, that I know what's happening then after that, I have no idea. Like for one of the things that I I help people with too is because I love that you have it on paper and that you did kind of a game plan was like, also looking at like, what's the worst case scenario? The worst case scenario is I have to go back and get another job. Right? Like, I just remember doing this activity with a friend of mine when we first when I first went out on my own and, and it was like, Okay, what's the worst case scenario? Okay, you just go back to corporate and like, get your job back or get a similar job or whatever. And so having that plan like, gives you that opportunity to kind of baby step out so luckily for you luckily for me, having that plan that kind of runway, where we knew what was happening, allowed us to go and and keep going but

Angela Joy Markham:

zactly you don't just lose those skills I kept you know my my Moorhead hesitant husband kind of needed that reassurance. Like I had it all played out in my head, but he needed to hear it. I understand that. But yes, I was telling him the same thing. My skills just don't go away. Like I couldn't get it. I bet you my corporate job would even take me back if if I needed to. I don't want to resort to that, but it's an option if if I truly felt like I needed to fall back on something.

Tara Bryan:

Yeah, that's awesome. I love that. Okay, cool. Um, alright, so you said you have created some courses and you have created do some one on one work and and some coaching or services? Do you do more done for you or more kind of do it yourself kind of stuff?

Angela Joy Markham:

So yes, I kind of offer all of the options right now. So I do monthly management, which is the completely hands off someone who says, I don't want to learn affiliate marketing, I want you to just come and set it up for me and do it. So I do the completely done for you. My course the flourishing affiliate is a six week program, where it's weekly coaching with me and then course material, so that kind of hybrid coaching and coursework. And then I also do if someone just doesn't want to go in and learn from a course, I do one on one, either a six week program that's just one on one with me. Or like I said earlier, we can hop in and do a 90 minute you fill out a questionnaire before we hop on the 90 minute call and we just bust out all of your issues, all of your questions and come up with a game plan for you that you can leave that 90 minutes session going okay, I now know what I seem to do.

Tara Bryan:

Very cool. So, um, if you had to give like one or two tips of what has worked really well for you, as you're setting up your offers or setting up, like how you wanted to work with people, like what would that be helped somebody who is kind of struggling with, I don't even know how to help people, right? Like, what method should I be using? What How did you work through that kind of process in your head? Yes.

Angela Joy Markham:

Um, so first, I would suggest simply starting off with just a bright, giant brainstorm list. So think about everything that you use in a day or in a week, related to your business and just dump it out on paper. And maybe even set yourself a timer 20 minute timer go through, look at subscriptions that you're using. And some of these are unconventional, I find that people just getting started with affiliate marketing. They think it needs to be a product. Well, apps, a lot of times have affiliate programs. Like I said, subscription services, things you're using for maybe website hosting, or email service provider, those things make great affiliate programs. And then as you move through, I would say that my second biggest tip is just make sure you're having a content platform where your affiliate links live. Probably the number one question I get asked is, do I have to have a website? And, you know, I want to become an affiliate? And it's, my short answer is no, you don't have to. But my long answer is, you are going to create for yourself more sustainable long term income if you have a content platform. So that could be a YouTube channel, it could be a podcast, like this could be a website, where you're creating blog content, but strictly trying to, you know, succeed with affiliate marketing just on Instagram is not going to be long term success for you, you want that content to be valuable to your audience. So let your affiliate links live there on your content platform, and use social media platforms as that tool to get people to your content. So the easiest point of entry here is going to be to create probably a blog post or a video or podcast that kind of lists out your favorite tools that you would that you would use, those tools can be affiliate links, of course, we're disclosing that there are affiliate links. So social media can be used to direct people to that content, where they're finding value value. So within that content, you are talking about what you love about these tools, maybe it's a how to video on how to use it. Maybe it's a comparison list and how it compares with its competitors. So where your affiliate links really need to be value packs, in order for people to really be engaged and to trust you enough to buy from you.

Tara Bryan:

Yeah, I love that, because they think that, especially when you were saying earlier about not like being salesy with the affiliate stuff is that if it lives somewhere, then you can just be talking about whatever it is, and then guide them there, where if it's an article that you've written, or a video that you've done with the affiliate link, it's not like, I don't know, it's always like, when I have a link, I hate like, posting it out there. Like, here's my thing, and here's the affiliate link, buy this thing, right? Like instead, like you're saying, like, go, you know, provide the value of whatever the content is and say, Hey, here's more. And then here's a, you know, here's a way to just go directly to whatever that product or whatever that thing is that that you have an affiliate program with. It just tends to be a softer approach to how to how to get something out there. Like this is my favorite thing. Let me tell you about it. And here's where you can find it. Because here's the thing is that you can talk about something and be like, This is awesome. But if you don't include a link to it, like, what are you people have to go find it? No, that doesn't make any sense, like having a link from whatever you're talking about. Just make sense.

Angela Joy Markham:

Yeah, you have to circle back to one of our very first points here if that affiliate partnership is something that you have really gone through and evaluated. If it's aligned with you and aligned with your audience and truly serves them and it's going to help them you have to just flip that script, you are doing them a disservice if you don't link to it. If you don't link to the product and talk about how it can help them. So you hit the nail on the head. Yes, it makes it so much easier for you to just say hey, like you love this. You love this water cup that I'm using thing like, go check out my post where I talked about a comparison on why this is my favorite water bottle. And you can check it out and I link to it there. Yep,

Tara Bryan:

yeah. Yeah, yeah. Okay, I love that. All right. Very cool. Um, did you have anything else you want to add? Before I interrupted you of your process? You don't?

Angela Joy Markham:

I don't think so I, the only thing I'm thinking as we're going through this too, is because you know, there are a lot of business owners listening here, who might be going? Well, I've heard Amy Porterfield, for example, talk about how much of her revenue has come from affiliates. So on the flip side, I think as business owners, we also have to think about how we can use affiliates to promote our brands. So just a completely different way that a lot of people don't think about is, yes, I can become an affiliate. And I can promote other brands and products in addition to mine and make a recurring income that way. But also, if I have a product or service, like right now, my course, I'm using affiliates for my course, to try to, you know, get my course, off the ground a little bit quicker, that can be a great business growth strategy, using affiliate marketing as well.

Tara Bryan:

Okay, so dig into that a little bit for people who don't know what that what that means. So what you're saying is that so you're selling your course that you have your your six week course. Yes. So you're selling your six week course, in order to get more exposure out there? You are, you have asked people to basically be your affiliate. Right. Yeah. So then you're paying a commission?

Angela Joy Markham:

Correct? Yes. So I'm paying a percentage of my revenue. And I think that's what's beautiful about affiliate marketing is no matter which side you're on. Unlike, you know, paid search is going to be a cost per click. So you could be paying for all this traffic, but isn't necessarily contributing to your bottom line. Affiliate marketing is not that way. So you can offer I've seen clients I've worked with offer anywhere from 10 to 50% of your course. And you're only paying out that affiliate that's promoting your product, if they are bringing in actual sales. And so I think a lot of people here think that you probably need to be a big brand, to become an affiliate merchant and use affiliates to grow your program. And that's absolutely not the case. I've seen affiliates, or I've seen merchants use affiliates, their first timeout with their course they've never even launched it before. But they're like, I want to get this off the ground running a little faster. And I have a networking group or I have past clients I've worked with that can help me promote my course or my product.

Tara Bryan:

Okay, so everybody, listen to this, like this is this is a game changer. So what you're saying is, in order to get more people into my course, I actually go out to people I know who have audiences, big or small, that may benefit from what I'm offering. So benefit from my course. And then they can put it in front of their audience. And when they put it in front of their audience, they benefit because they're getting a portion of the sales, but you benefit because you're getting more eyeballs on your offer. Right? All right, everybody listening to that

Angela Joy Markham:

50% of something is better than 0% of nothing. Right? So and exactly what you said, I encourage anyone who wants to start with this route, starting just there with people they know. But eventually I work clients. You know, I work with clients on this facet, too. I work with some course creators right now. We're working to build their affiliate programs. And I always recommend starting small a little bit with the affiliates and then growing to a point where you you know, maybe have these vetted applications coming in. And your affiliate list is just getting bigger and bigger, bigger, like Amy Porterfield style, I think she said 85% of her revenue from 2021 came from

Tara Bryan:

affiliates. 85% Wow, that's crazy.

Angela Joy Markham:

Yes. So she uses affiliates like no other. So

Tara Bryan:

yeah, and I think I think that your point is, is really important that 50% of something is better than 0% of nothing, right? Like, like, cuz I have a lot of people that I work with who kind of get stuck on Well, I don't know, if I have to give away 50% of my revenue, it's not really worth than selling it. And that's, you know, I think that what you're saying is just so important because it's it's about getting the momentum in about getting the right people in. And let's be honest, like you said, you can go do Facebook ads or something else, and you're just sending it out to the masses and paying a ton of money. And you don't even know if they're the right people. If you get in front of other people's audiences, you know that they're the target audience. That's, that's, yeah, I mean, that just brings you in the right people. And sales will increase, because hopefully, you'll have more volume.

Angela Joy Markham:

Yeah. And your path, your past clients and customers are your best advertisers. So you know, if your program is, which I'm sure all of you your program, you want to achieve results in these people. So your customers get results, and they're going to be your best spokespeople for you know, exposing your product to new audiences. And if they have an incentive, even if you don't feel like you want to give away 50%. You know, if they have some sort of enticing incentive, it can create just like amazing, amazing results for business growth for you.

Tara Bryan:

Hmm, so client, past clients and customers can also be affiliates. Oh, no, you're talking. Okay, everybody, hopefully, you're listening to this, because this is like, these are awesome nuggets of how to get your course sold. And, and really gain that momentum where you have the ability to help people and get them in your world, get the results, get those transformations, and then continue to grow. Awesome. Very cool. I love that. So one question I always ask all of my mom entrepreneurs, is, as a busy mom and business owner, how do you balance it balance at all? Do you have a morning routine? Do you do something that's just for you that helps kind of keep and build your energy for how you show up and do this all the time?

Angela Joy Markham:

Yes, oh, great question. I have developed just in the past year of doing business have developed so many things that I never would have thought would have helped me. But one of them is meditation. In the morning, we have a typical crazy household in the morning trying to get out the door, my husband goes to work and take the kids to daycare, and then I immediately meditate and it's amazing. So that's one thing. And then also even just spending like five minutes in the morning journaling, like actual pen in hand on paper, journaling out my thoughts, or maybe it's what I want to manifest for the day or the week or the month. And then also, simply of just taking care of myself in my physical body as well. So I feel like those first two things are kind of my, my mental and spiritual side, and then making sure I'm moving. I'm part of an amazing workout program and health and fitness program. And I have a health coach. And she's amazing. And literally, as a busy mom, I tell myself every day if I'm moving accounts, and so even just spending 20 minutes is my minimum, whether it's going for a walk or doing some sort of YouTube workout, it's usually something from home. Those are my non negotiables. And I think as far as my mindset goes, I've really had to evaluate and tweak my expectations. December in January at our house, we had just sicknesses up the Yahoo, we had our daycare closed because of COVID. And so it was a time for me to really sit back and look at what 2022 is going to look like for me, and work on setting up systems in my business, so that things can eventually run a little bit on autopilot. I mean, again, this is where my affiliate partnerships are just worth their weight in gold. But then also with my course I'm working on moving out of launching and putting my course on evergreen. Some things like that, that can just ease my mind a little bit. So if we have another daycare shutdown, and my kids are home for two weeks, I don't have that stress and pressure of OH my gosh, I need to be working because I read a statistic not that long ago, kids are sick an average of 15 to 18 times a year. And then multiply that by how many kids you have I have to that's a lot. So I can't really I can't really avoid it. I just have to kind of roll with the punches in that sense. So setting my business and my mind up to be just in a healthy place.

Tara Bryan:

Yeah, that's awesome. All right. Very cool. I love I love that I it's a question that I think is important because as entrepreneurs, I don't care if you're a man or a woman, a mom or not a mom. It's super important to set up that time for yourself where you're able to reflect and think and and just take the time that you need to show up in in your best with as your best self. So thank you for sharing those tips. All right, what what is one book tool resource, something that you cannot live without that you would recommend to my crew?

Angela Joy Markham:

Oh, I just recommended this the other day. So I have to share an app, a free app called Insight Timer. And you needed to check out Sarah Blondin on there she Insight Timer provides free meditations, guided meditations. And she's one of their contributors on there. And she's also on Instagram as well. And I could listen to her voice all day. And her meditations just truly speak to me. They're anywhere from like, 10 to 15 minutes long. And like I said, it's free. So y'all should go check it out.

Tara Bryan:

Awesome. Very cool. I love Insight Timer. I, I use that one as well. I have one that I do over and over and over again. So I'll I'll check out. What was her last name?

Angela Joy Markham:

Sarah Blondin. So it's HBLON D I N.

Tara Bryan:

Okay. I will put that in the show notes. So everybody can find out how to find her. But But yeah, Insight Timer. That's, that's a great tool. So if you are not meditating, you need to start doing it. It's awesome. I can't say I do it very regularly. And I don't do it very consistently. But when I do it does, it makes a huge difference in just setting your intentions and quieting your mind. So that reminds me to go back. Go back in and do it. Awesome. So where can all of my listeners find you and learn about these great programs that you've been talking about today?
